Week Six!
Week Six is here - time really DOES fly when you're having fun!
Since everyone is doing such a great job at increasing activity, I thought I would do some research into the kind of food and diet that would go well with a more active lifestyle. Not too many surprises here.
I guess the basics never change - but this is a hard one to comply with -"Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day'"
"Reduce the amount of fat and sugar in your diet. Remember to check food labels for the amount of fat and sugar in foods."
Here's an interesting tip for all of you Atkins fans - when you are more active you need carbs. So - "Increase the amount of starchy foods (pasta, rice and potatoes) in your diet".
Push-up Trivia!
Most push-ups in 5 minutes: 441 by Giuseppe Cusano at the Loftus Road Soccer Stadium in Fulham UK on 24 Nov 2003
World push up record with both hands on raw eggs(!!): 112; by Johann Schneider. Which gave out first - Johann or the raw eggs?

Push-up update. Was stuck on 13 last week. Did 15 on Wed and hit 18 on Saturday. Targeting 20 for tonight.
Ahhhh ... the Doldrums. This kind of thing happens with many kinds of 'resolutions' and here's why. You notice small changes when you start an activity program and that keeps you motivated. People who go on diets or start body-building notice the same thing. Then after 4-6 weeks the improvements aren't as noticeable anymore - you hit a wall. The motivation starts to diminish.
Then you're thinking "what's the point of all this discomfort and inconvience if I'm not noticing a discernible change?" But you are improving - it's just not as noticeable at this stage as it was when you started. You've reached a new stage. Now you have to break through that wall.
Long distance runners find the same thing at the half way mark in a long distance run. All of a sudden the goal seems impossible. But you hang in - because the next improvement will be like a leap. Suddenly it gets easier. It just takes a while. The breakthrough is really quite cool - and very addictive. I don't think runners are addicted to running so much as they are addicted to those days when they feel like they can run forever.
Psychologists talk today about your 'inner voice' - that conversation we have with ourselves at various times. Mine will say "What the hell am I doing this for?" or "This isn't fun anymore so why not stop and take it easy." Just tell the voice to shut up. You know better what's good for you.
That voice is a short-term thinker - long-term strategy is definitely in favour of you getting healthier - and now.
I know I need to be healthier - If I'm going to live long enough to see any grand kids (Note to daughters.)
Sunday - 30 minutes biking and 16 lousy push-ups. Stuck again.
Monday - moved over to the 'dread-mill" 3.21 miles with 10 minute warm-up for 41 minutes. Then did 16 pushups again.
Tuesday - 30 minutes biking
Thursday - Treadmill - 10 minute warm-up, 16 push-ups, 25 sit-ups then 4 miles. Total 51:10. Running is awesome!
